  • October 2004: RI investigation underway.  
  • October 5, 2004: Started groundwater profiling near the Holding Basin
  • October 4, 2004: Installed piezometers in AOI 2
  • September 29, 2004: Revising work plans in response to public comments
  • September 2004: Mobilizing field equipment and trailers
  • July 2004: Response to comments on RI/FS work plan submitted to US EPA.  
  • December 2003:  Submitted first draft of the RI/FS work plans to EPA and MADEP.
  • August 11, 2003:  The RI/FS Trust Fund was fully funded.
  • June 18, 2003:  The Administrative Order by Consent (AOC) and Statement of Work (SOW) negotiated with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region I and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP) governing the performance of RI/FS activities became effective.   

EE/CA Activities:   

  • May 2008:  Proposed Plan Public Meeting for "Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) Disposition of Structures and Contents".
  • April 2008: EPA publishes Proposed Plan “EPA Seeks Public Comment on Proposal to Demolish Site Buildings, Nuclear Metals Buildings Need to be Demolished to Prevent the Release of Hazardous Substances”. (Click here to download a copy).
  • February 2008: Final Draft "Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) Disposition of Structures and Contents". (Click here to download a copy)
  • December 2007: EE/CA Approval Memorandum (Click here to download)
  • July 2007: Revised Draft "Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) Disposition of Structures and Contents"
  • Spring 2007: EPA’s National Remedy Review Board reviewed the EE/CA’s preliminary options and costs for the performance of a Non-Time Critical Removal Action (NTCRA) and provided comments to EPA Region I.
  • October 2006: Submitted Draft Engineering Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) for the disposition of site structures and building contents for agency review.
  • June 2006: EPA issued Notice to Proceed for an EE/CA for the site buildings and contents (click here to download)

Agency Activities:

  •  January 2008: EPA began a “Time Critical Removal Action” at the Site to remove containers of hazardous substances within the facility that pose a risk of fire or explosion. (Click here to see press release).

  • July & August of 2007: EPA performed an inventory of combustibles, flammables, and incompatible materials located within the Site buildings to determine if an imminent or substantial endangerment to public health, welfare, or the environment.

  • June 2007: Small Fire occurred in on of the Site buildings.

  • May 2007: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Radiation Control Program (MADPH-RCP) and Starmet entered into a Consent Decree (CD) under which Starmet has agreed to permanently vacate the site by October 31, 2007.

  • Spring 2006: MADEP conducted a removal action with proceeds obtained by the State through a settlement with the U.S. Army, which consisted of the removal of more than 3,800 drums and containers containing depleted uranium from within the facility.
